The Citadel

Story: Su’Kal

Discovery gets info that leads them to believe they have not only the location of the source of the Burn, but that there is a lifeform still living there.  They knew a Kelpian sent the initial distress call, but Saru notes that the spots on her forehead were not from radiation, but indicated she was pregnant...so her child may somehow still be alive on the planet.  When they arrive they find that within all the radiation is a planet made entirely of dilithium.  Saru, Burnham, and Culber beam down to find the lifeform.  When they get there, Burnham looks Trill, Culber is Bajoran, and Saru is human....and the whole planet appears to be some large scale holoprogram, albeit one that is slowly deteriorating.  The program turns out to have been created by the child's mother to help raise him until a rescue can come.  The child, called Su'Kal, is completely out of his depth.  He doesn't even really know that there is a world outside of the program.
Meanwhile, Tilly is taking her first command of the ship...hoping to live up to her new role of First Officer but feeling justifiably nervous about the whole thing.  Sadly things go badly fairly quick while they are repairing their shields outside the radiation before returning to rescue Saru and co. because Osyraa shows up.

On the planet Su'kal faces his fear (a monster program based on a story he was told growing up), and he freaks out and sends out a crazy beam of something. It briefly damages both Osyraa's ship and Discovery...nearly causing another Burn.  And if that is the case then the Kelpian is somehow the cause of the Burn, perhaps as a result of growing up on a planet made of dilithium and covered in crazy radiation.  Saru and Culber stay to try and help the child, while Burnham goes back to Book's ship to help Discovery out of it's predicament.  Adira has also hid onto Book's ship and beams down to Bulber and Saru to help them.

Osyraa uses this moment to her advantage and connects her ship to Discovery, takes control and the bridge, and they put a device on Stamets to force him to jump.  She takes off with the ship.  Burnham and Book are too late to stop them, and Saru, Culber, and Adira are trapped on a radioactive planet trying to help a half crazed Kelpian who unknowingly has caused the Burn in the first place.

I'll say this, it's certainly a cliffhanger.

NEXT TIME: Osyraa has Discovery
