The best episodes of "Star Trek Continues" have, in my opinion, always been the ones that offer up a completely new and original story, in the complete recreation of the style of TOS. While I have often enjoyed the episodes of STC that have some sequel element, the original show was never much for follow-ups...that is a pure fan mentality. When STC really attempts to go boldly where Trek hasn't gone before, it almost always succeeds.  This latest episode, really showcases what they can do...make an episode that just feels like the old morality plays of the original show, with clear messages that comment on our society all couched in colorful and fun space adventures.
"What Ships Are For" sees the Enterprise coming to the aid of a somewhat isolationist planet, which has spent a long time attempting to become a completely united and peaceful world, but radiation from the sun is causing an illness to spread around their world.  The radiation also happens to affect their eyesight, and has done so for a millennia, and it keeps them from seeing color.  The Enterprise crew manage to find a way to help stave off the radiation...but before they can implement it they discover that age old enemies of the planet they plan to help, may be living among them in peace...and seeing color would allow them to suddenly spot the difference and possibly send them into chaos.

It is a great episode with a fine script, that is written with a very timely message about refugees and borders and the ways we view the "other."  In this day and age, this kind of message told in a Trek type of style feels very refreshing.  Also, it is just great to see Trek alumni John De Lancie in a new Trek role!
