Story: Such Sweet Sorrow
Written By: Jenny Lumet & Michelle Paradise & Alex Kurtzman
Series: Star Trek: Discovery
Year: 2019
Discovery's second is coming to an end, and the first part of the two-part finale sets the stage for how the finale may come to an end. Basically, they have decided to blow up Discovery in order to keep control from getting the Sphere Data. They evacuate to the Enterprise, but then the self destruct doesn't work. Pike orders torpedoes shot at Discovery, but Burnham has a vision from the Time Crystals, and realizes that it won't work. The Sphere Data will refuse to let itself be destroyed, as it has at every turn. They concoct a plan to rebuild the Red Angel suit, Michael will travel into the future and drag Discovery with her.
I give them credit, they've built everything up to this, even the Short Treks have all played a role (though the Mudd one hasn't yet, I hope it doesn't). If "Calypso" is any indication, Discovery is eventually meant to be wandering the universe in the distant future with a Sentient AI. The Sphere Data in the ship's computer certainly can point to that. Obviously they still have an hour left in this season, they could do all sorts of things to try and surprise the audience. I am sure they will.
I did like the look of the modernized Enterprise interior. The did a good job of taking the cheap original sets, making them look sturdier, mixing them a bit with the aesthetic of this new show. The thing is, I like to think that the original Trek didn't look as cheap as it did, and this show is doing the same. They are pretending "look it always looked this awesome and slick." I can go for it. If it makes your nerd brain melt and you have to put it in another universe...go for it. But I can take a few strange visual updates and changes.
Overall, the episode is fine. But I fear that overall the second half of this season has been "fine" and not as exciting or interesting as the first half had been. The Sphere Data which had been this great Star Trek concept when it was introduced, has become a MacGuffin for Destruction. So far they've made Control already seem like an evil sentient AI that can't be killed...so really what is going to happen if it gets the Sphere Data? It becomes more of that? I think that being the major driving force of this half has disappointed me a tad. Nothing has been horrible, I'm still along for the ride, but when this season began it was really great. And now it feels less so.
