Story: Through the Valley of Shadows
Written By: Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt
Series: Star Trek: Discovery
Year: 2019
Discovery heads towards the latest signal, this time it hovers above the Klingon monastery of Boreth, the planet where Tyler left he and L'Rell's son. With the help of L'Rell they get safe passage to the planet, and Pike heads down to try and get a Time Crystal to help with the whole Red Angel/Control business. On the planet he finds a grown Klingon who was once that baby, as the Time Crystals age people and things differently. It's interesting enough, especially as I was not looking forward to seeing the Klingons again at all.
Meanwhile Burnham and Spock head off in a shuttle to investigate a Section 31 ship that didn't check in on time. They suspect Control and/or Leland may be involved, and they are right. Control poses as a person Burnham once served with on the Shenzhou, but it doesn't take long for either her or Spock to figure out that he isn't what he seems. Before they are able to stop it, it does let slip that it wants to turn Michael into Control to get the Sphere Data, which Spock supposes is probably due to her being the one thing it anticipates can stop it. Sure why not!
The Pike story has it's most effective moment when using a Time Crystal he finds more than he bargained for. The Crystals show him his future, the one where he ends up an invalid in a chair, his face melted and scarred from Delta Radiation. If he takes the Crystal, that fate is sealed...for the mission, and because he believes he can handle it and his ideals can survive, he takes the Crystal. This is possibly the best moment of the show. Where Pike sees his horrific accident but decides that his ideals and belief in Starfleet are stronger than his own personal happy ending. I like that element.
There is also a small thread in the episode in which Reno attempts to help mend the rift between Stamets and Culber. It's very minor, but I liked the character development that it gave both our regulars and Reno. Just a nice touch for the season. Reno needs to stick around.
Honestly, when I saw the trailer involving Klingons last week, I wasn't enthusiastic. This show just doesn't make them particularly interesting to me...and since there has been so much Klingon content in the past shows, I just don't need more (particularly with their marble mouth...I don't want to be that guy, but I can barely understand L'Rell). But despite my continued lack of interest in them on the show, this episode was pretty solid, especially the Pike stuff. Mount is just great in the role...so anytime he can truly take the lead I am interested.
