Phasing to the Farm

Story: Much Ado About Boimler
Written By: M. Willis
Series: Star Trek: Lower Decks

Despite this episode being named after Boimler, he is actually relegated to the B-plot this episode. While the Captain and other high ranking members go on a top secret mission to plant some seeds, the Cerritos gets a babysitter Captain (ala Jellico). To impress this temp bridge crew Boimler helps Rutherford with his transporter upgrades...unfortunately things don’t quite work out, and Boimler continues phasing in a transporter beam long after. He and Tendi (who has created a creepy dog that can morph into terrifying shapes) are sent onto a medical ship taking them, and other freaks from scientific accidents, to a farm. This is the B-story and while I enjoyed seeing an Endosian (the species of the original Animated show’s character Arex), it is only a minor story. I didn’t find it funny at all, that’s for sure...but I didn’t despise it.
The main story involves Mariner and the temp bridge crew. Turns out the temp Captain is one of Mariner’s friends from the academy, and the captain decides for this temporary position to make Mariner first officer. But Mariner is constantly letting her down...she is making constant screw-ups, and is not the sharp awesome person she knew back in the day. She hasn’t even moved up from Ensign! But it turns out Mariner was tanking it the whole time to avoid her old friend trying to join her on her usual ship and help her get promoted.

It really highlights what bugs me about Mariner. They try and pull a Riker thing like her career is stagnant and it is just her trying to figure herself out...but she seems to know who she is and what she wants, so I’m not convinced by this premise. How long is she gonna act like a kid and avoid going anywhere in her career, how long does she need to “find herself?” I just never buy her character.
