Trial and Eel

The Lower Decks gang are forced to testify in some alien trial while the Bridge Crew are being suspended in mid-air, seemingly in custody. While they all attempt to relay what little they actually know about the situation surrounding a map of the Neutral Zone and the stealing of a Romulan Bird-of-Prey.
This episode actually has what I feel this series has needed in terms of structure. The show needs to play on the premise that the Lower Decks crew is usually out of the loop on what the main players are up to. The bridge crew should always be played straight. The fact that they are all caricatures is such a failing.

In the end it turns out it was never a trail at all, but some bizarre alien birthday party. The episode is crammed full of references and even has a cameo by John De Lancie as Q. References don’t really equate to actual jokes though, and that is another major failing with this show.

I so rarely actually laugh. It could be a perfect show to poke phone at the tropes of 90s Trek while lovingly paying tribute to that era...but it is just packed dense full of references believing the mere mention of things we fans would no should be hilarious.  The target audience for this show appears to be the hyper fan who loves back references and that specific era of the show. I may love that era, but references without actual jokes is one of the things that made me eventually dislike Family Guy. I like actual jokes with my references. Can we please get some Futurama writers working on this series?
