Story: Ask Not
Written By: Kalinda Vazquez
Series: Star Trek: Short Treks
Year: 2019
A young cadet is on some boring duty on a Starbase, when an attack hits and she is suddenly left in charge of a prisoner...an apparently mutinous Pike! While Pike tries to talk her into setting him free because of the ongoing attacks from the Tholians, the unseasoned cadet is forced to hold her own against a seasoned vet, and keep him under lock and key despite his former authority and the information that her husband may be in danger and he may be her only chance to save him.
Of course, it all ends up being bogus. It was just a test, not unlike the Kobayashi Maru or the psych test Wesley once went through. Intense realistic tests are a key part of Starfleet training...how else can the evaluate whether or not a human is actually ready to venture out into the unknown, where intense unexpected situations show up daily.
This is a shorter Short Trek than most. Rather than 15 to 20 minutes, this one is under 10. I liked it, Mount is good, but it doesn't have too much to truly offer. I was able to rattle off two similar styled tests from older Trek...so it isn't a fresh idea or anything. But it was well executed for what it is.
NEXT TIME: Animation returns to Trek!
