He Was an Idiot

Story: The Trouble with Edward
Written By: Graham Wagner
Series: Star Trek: Short Treks
Year: 2019

The next Short Trek in the last batch involves a newly promoted Captain (coming from the Enterprise, giving us a brief scene with Pike seeing her off at the start), as she takes command of a science vessel, quickly rubs one awkward strange scientist the wrong way, and he quickly brings the whole ship down with his experiment.
This is essentially a little comedy involving Edward Larkin, a strange science officer who has discovered tribbles, a slow-moving, underpopulated alien animal that he believes would make great food. He wants to genetically modify them so they produce faster than they currently do so they can become a giant food source.  When confronted with the moral issue of their possible sentience, he brushes it off as maybe he can just modify them with brain damage. The captain essentially kills his plan but he does it anyway...and the ship is soon so overrun with Tribbles that it can no longer support life, and they essentially destroy the ship.

It has a few humorous moments, but I didn't like it enough to watch it again. I especially found it silly that the way he modified them was just giving them human DNA.  Sure.  That's the kind of dumb irritating science that has made me continually roll my eyes at Discovery.  I have defended the show in many ways, but it's approach to science is constantly frustrating, and feels like a bunch of dummies are writing it.

I like H. Jon Benjamin, and I like tribbles and comedy episodes of Trek.  A shame this short didn't really work in the end, even with all those ingredients.

NEXT TIME: Prisoner Pike
