Evacuating Prisoners

Story: The Examples
Written By: Kyle Jarrow
Series: Star Trek: Discovery
Year: 2021

While gathering more data on the DMA, it disappears and then reappears somewhere else.  This suggests it is not a natural phenomena, but in fact man-made.  It's new course suggests it could wipe out a whole alien colony, so Discovery leads a large scale evacuation.  The people they are evacuating left some prisoners behind for dead, calling them examples. Burnham and Book personally go to rescue these prisoners as they have no intention of leaving anyone, even prisoners, behind.  They are able to convince the prisoners to come with them (they were reluctant to go to just another brig when there was a chance the DMA doesn't hit and they can escape), by requesting asylum...since most of their crimes are petty compared to their sentence.

Meanwhile Stamets is working with one of the most genius scientists in the Federation, a guy working on replicating the spore drive, to further investigate the DMA.  He believes he can gather more info by creating a smaller version of the DMA and recreating it. Stamets is initially reluctant to work with him because he feels the guy has slighted him while trying to recreate his own work without talking to Stamets at all.  But Stamets gets just as locked into his dangerous plans for investigating the DMA until Saru shuts it down.

I must admit that this was another decent episode.  I still hate that there is some season long doomsday device, because that trope has been done to death in this show almost every season...but I thought the episode was decent. Even if they still do the ridiculous tech talk "imposssible...well unless we tech this, but that would be crazy...also I have done it."  It moves so fast and barely makes sense. At least Next Generation had some kind of grounded in reality technobabble...here it feels so phony.
