Story: The City on the Edge of Forever
Written By: Harlan Ellison
Series: Star Trek: The Original Series
Year: 1967
"The City on the Edge of Forever" is, in fact, the best episode of the entire run of the Original Series. Okay, maybe that is opinion. But an opinion shared by many. The cast is top notch here. Shatner gives a pretty good performance, one that isn’t too Shatner-Over-The-Top. Kelley is fantastic in this episode. First when he’s gone mad due to an accidental injection, and then again when he’s began to recover. Nimoy gives a solid performance, nothing to notable, but Nimoy ALWAYS gives a solid performance, and I don’t mention it enough.
The whole Guardian of Forever thing is a wonderful piece of Trek, it looks so 60s in the best way possible. And then the actual story begins, Kirk falling for the girl who HAS to die because history says so, finding McCoy, trying to save the whole of the Federation’s history…there is so much that goes on in this story, and it only gets better upon repeat viewings.
It is one of my favorites, not just of the original series, but of the whole damn franchise.
