Meeting God

Story: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

The fifth film was originally supposed to be the last. But it was so bad both box-office and plot wise that no one could blame them for going back for the sixth film. There is a lot wrong with The Final Frontier. Number one is the choice for director. Nimoy did a great job taking over for Nicholas Meyer in The Search for Spock. The number one reason for this is that he was barely in the film. He was able to focus on the film, figure out directing that way. He had it under control by The Voyage Home and could direct and have a bigger role in the film.
Shatner is only a good actor when directors force him to tone it down. He goes for the bigger screen presence because, lets face it, Shatner has a big ego. So being the star, having to be in almost every scene, he can’t entirely focus too much on the direction. So with no director reining him in, and no real clue on how to direct on top of that…there’s gonna be problems in the production.

The plot is totally ridiculous, so there isn’t even a good script. It is full of holes and dumb ideas. Spock has a half brother? RIDICULOUS. And he doesn’t make any sense in the film at all. They are going to meet god? GIVE ME A BREAK! It is like they sat down in a room and said “Last movie, we gotta make it big. What would be the biggest story ever? GOD.” The whole thing is anti-climactic too. They meet god and he’s just some boring alien.
Then there are little things like, trying to start a relationship between Scotty and Uhura…who wants that? Was there some clamoring for a love story between to background characters? And it goes nowhere. Uhura does that CREEPY fan dance? Nothing weirder. Then that whole odd subplot with the Rock and Roll Klingon looking to just blow shit up. What was that even about? They just couldn’t make a movie WITHOUT Klingons?

The only decent scenes are the camping stuff at the beginning, and some of the character moments that Sybok unleashes from their memories. Beyond that the film is a total waste. Boring too.

NEXT TIME: Peace with Klingons
