A human colony is being stalked and attacked by a hideous being in their mines. The Enterprise crew is trying to help the colony but eventually discover what is actually happening.
The being, the Horta, is not actually a monster; it is the original inhabitant of the planet. And it allowed the human colonists to coexist on the planet, until they hurt its home and child.
I love this episode, because its moral is simple: don’t judge a book by its cover. That sounds lame, but the execution in this well written and intelligent episode make it seem wise. "The Devil in the Dark" is a fantastic story.
