"Errand of Mercy" is an important episode. It is the first ever appearance of the original series greatest foes, and spawn of several TNG Era plots and stories. The Klingons. The Klingons are fantastic villains for this series, but they don't get their fantastic culture until TNG.
Here they are effective, mostly due to the performance of John Colicos as Kor, the Klingon Captain. Kor would go on to make a few appearances on DS9. Here he is effective as the foe to Kirk.
The peaceful Organians due not wish war, but refuse to act in any violent way. Kirk and Co. want to stop the Klingons invading, but the Organians refuse to fight. It is an interesting tale of Peace vs. War and when one may be needed over the other. Is being non-violent completely worth losing your freedom? A nice thought provoking episode to introduce one of the most popular races in Star Trek history.
