The Planet Killer

Story: The Doomsday Machine
Written By: Norman Spinrad
Series: Star Trek: The Original Series
Year: 1967

In the same way that "Amok Time" is excellent because of how fun and Star Trek it is, "The Doomsday Machine" is fantastic in how dramatic and Star Trek it is. A giant Planet-eating doomsday machine is ravaging the cosmos and had damaged another starship so badly, it was left drifting in space…all of the crew dead except the Commodore on board. Decker has been driven to slight madness, obsessed with exacting his revenge on the machine.
The cast is excellent, everybody at the top of their game here. Matt Decker is performed really well. You can see that behind his little case of insanity, he is a beaten and hurt Federation commodore. It is a great performance.

It is all around one of the best episodes of the series, and probably the whole franchise.
