Star Trek: The Original Series - Season 2 Recap

The second season is pretty strong, in many ways just as strong as the first.  I think there are more really great episodes in this season, but the first season is generally far more consistent. I like the second season, and it has plenty of classics to make it generally well loved, but I might just enjoy the first season just a bit more.

One notable addition to the second season is the character Chekov, who is introduced near the beginning of the season. For the most part in the original series, or at least in this season, he just spends his time telling people that everything was originated in Russia.

In the end Star Trek’s second season was struggling in the ratings, and the chances of cancellation were getting pretty high. The fans kept it on the air though, with a massive letter writing campaign. But NBC felt no loyalty to these fans or to Roddenberry and the rest of the cast and crew of the Star Trek. As a result, they shifted the time-slots, and Roddenberry got pissy and ditched the show. Someone else would then head the Third season…and the problems would really creep in.
