Barclay is afraid of the Transporter, not just annoyed by it or a little turned off by the idea like McCoy of Pulaski, but genuinely scared to death of getting in the thing. It is something his character is well suited for in this show, being afraid of things that are taken as normal in this series.
So the episode is rather solid, although I think it would have been better served to just really focus on the fear, and not give validity to the fear with the microbes in the transporter. They detract from the point that his fear is irrational.
