Story: Birthright, Part I
Written By: Brannon Braga
Series: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Year: 1993
The first episode in this two-parter is decent, but nothing too special. The Enterprise docks at Deep Space 9, and while there we get guest spot with Bashir. I love DS9 and Bashir, so this is good. We get a nice story of Bashir, Data and Geordi doing some experiment when Data has a bit of a weird experience…he is a dreaming.
This would have made for a really solid A-story with a great guest character in Bashir. But unfortunately the problem is this: it is the B-story to an A-story that ain’t all that interesting.
The Worf story is a boring mystery about the possibility of Worf’s father, Mogh, possibly being alive after the events of the Khitomer Massacre. Worf is on the trail and it leads to one of the dullest mysteries ever. I just never felt wrapped up in it as much as the Data story, which feels out of place with the Worf storyline. Data’s story is quickly wrapped up when the Worf tale carries on into the next episode.
NEXT TIME: Captured Klingons
