Story: The Nth Degree

Barclay is a character I think works on a few different levels. The first and foremost is that he shows us that not everyone is good around people…Barclay is shy and nervous and self-conscious. Often in Trek people are confident and sure of themselves, Barclay gives us something different, and that’s refreshing. But the better aspect of this is that he is actually quite smart, now that he has stepped out of his shell since his last appearance, he has become one of Geordi’s top engineers. He is still nervous and a bit shy, but he is working better.
The other good aspects of the character are that he gives us someone that makes Troi look like she has a purpose on the ship, she ACTUALLY counsels him. He also gives us someone recognizable to help Geordi with engineering stuff, now that Wesley is gone. It can’t always be Data; he has a lot of other duties on the ship. So Barclay gives us this other recognizable face in engineering, somebody we want to see Geordi bouncing ideas off of.
This episode involves Barclay getting hit by some kinda beam and becoming super intelligent to a point that he is almost all-powerful. It is weird, but I like it because I really like the character Schultz creates in Barclay.
NEXT TIME: Robin Hood
