Bendii Syndrome

Story: Sarek
Written By: Peter S. Beagle
Series: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Year: 1990

The second TOS crossover character was Sarek, Spock’s father (the first was McCoy in the pilot, but that was just a cameo). Now he only appeared in one TOS episode, but also an episode of the animated series, and was prominent in 3 of the 6 films. So he is a memorable enough character to make his presence here definitely welcome.
I like this episode, and that may be swayed for my fondness for the character of Sarek, or maybe just Mark Lenard. And I like what they do with Sarek here, giving him this sort of sad disease, which is reminiscent of many slow declining diseases we really have…so it sort of hits that right emotional level. I also enjoyed the emotional Sarek mind inside Picard referencing how in actuality he truly did love both Amanda and Spock. A very nice touch.

The unfortunate part of this episode is that the disease is spread to the crew…threw Vulcan telepathic powers. It just leads to pointless and lame fights that are totally out of character on purpose, and don’t really add any context to the story. I think the writer would have been better served to just leave them out.
