Story: Sins of the Father
Written By: Ronald D. Moore & W. Reed Moran
Series: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Year: 1990
The story of Worf gets a bit complicated right here. In this fantastic episode, the third classic in a row, a Klingon joins the crew of the Enterprise, in an exchange program of some sort. The guy is a total jerk to Worf. Finally it is revealed that he is testing the Klingon in Worf, and he is actually Worf’s younger brother, Kurn. He asks Worf to join him to the Klingon home world, to fight for their family name which is being dishonored by the council.
What is eventually discovered is that the council didn’t expect Worf, a Starfleet officer, to ever come fighting for his honor, and they were using his father’s name, Mogh, to be the fall guy for the family of Duras…a Klingon with a lot of reach in the Empire.
The episode is the first real look into the Klingon political structure, and Klingon life in general. It is a fantastic episode with a great look, and the best thing is it leaves with our guy losing in a way. Worf takes one for the Empire, he accepts discommendation in order to protect the son of a traitor, in order to keep the Empire he loves afloat. It is a great ending, one that would eventually pay off later.
NEXT TIME: Picard is Captured
