Story: Redemption
Written By: Ronald D. Moore
Series: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Year: 1991
"Redemption" is the culmination of a couple arcs that have been weaved for a while. First and foremost is the Worf arc, which began back in the first season with “Heart of Glory”. Now many of the plotlines that move this story along don’t technically begin there, but it is the first we learn the hows and whys of Worf being in Starfleet.
That arc continued in “The Emissary”, followed by “Sins of the Father” and “Reunion”…leading up to this moment here in “Redemption” when Worf gets his chance to earn back his honor in the eyes of the Klingon Empire (which was lost in “Sins of the Father”).
The secondary arc that has lead to this point is the looser Romulan arc. The Romulans announced they were “back” in “The Neutral Zone”. TNG then had several great episodes featuring them like “The Enemy” and “The Defector” and more recently “The Mind’s Eye”. The last one features a sinister off camera female Romulan which is revealed in the final cliffhanging moments of this episode. It is Sela…who looks a lot like Tasha Yar.
That isn’t the best cliffhanger in the world; the reveal of somebody who looks like somebody who died 3 years ago…but for those religiously following the show…it was a bombshell. It doesn’t hold up as well now, but I’d say the rest of the episode does.
