Story: The Host
Written By: Michael Horvat
Series: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Year: 1991
I don’t buy instant love stories. This story features a man known as Odan, a mediator of some kind, falling for Dr. Crusher. It’s a relationship I don’t really buy.
Odan is actually serves as the introduction to the Trill, a symbiotic race that can live with a host and a bug like creature that will live inside them. The bugs can hold the memories of their previous host as well.
When he mortally wounded and killed, the trill bug is temporarily placed into Riker, which weird Crusher out, which makes sense. In the end the bug is transplanted into a permanent host, and it’s a woman. Crusher remains weirded out.
It isn’t that great of an episode. The love story is unbelievable, and the Trill are interesting but weak here. They would go on to look and act completely different in DS9 by way of Dax. I prefer Dax.
