Story: The First Duty
Written By: Ronald D. Moore & Naren Shankar
Series: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Year: 1992
For an episode that brings back a former regular character that was not very popular with fans, and focuses a lot on him…it is probably one of the better episodes of the whole show.
It isn’t about space and wild ideas or strange new worlds, new life and new civilizations…it is about Earth, Starfleet academy, our characters and what it takes to be a member of Starfleet.
Wesley has become a member of an elite group of student pilots in the Academy, but there has been an accident resulting in the death of another student. There is a hearing to see if the other students involved have any information as to the cause, and to see if any are responsible.
It is a good look at Wes, who is forced to choose between standing with his friends or telling the truth. One way or the other he may let down everyone he knows and respects. Picard gives a great speech about what it means to wear the uniform as well.
