We Have Engaged the Borg

Story: The Best of Both Worlds

Season 3 had been consistently better than the previous seasons. If there were any naysayers left of TNG, it all ended here. This the story in which TNG not only stepped out of the shadow of TOS, but also began to show that it was far more than just spin off, it was one hell of a show.
“The Best of Both Worlds” is the pinnacle of TNG. It is the strongest story this series ever produced, and it has one of the best cliffhangers in the history of television. There isn’t one bad moment, one lame scene, or one piece of dialogue that isn’t important. It is a hell of an episode.

The story of the Borg was first hinted at in “The Neutral Zone”, and then the Borg made their first appearance in “Q Who”, another fantastic episode. Then we finally get that threat first hinted at in “The Neutral Zone”…the Borg are here, and they are heading for Earth.

Picard gets captured by the Borg, and is assimilated. The image of Picard, as a Borg, telling the Enterprise crew is one of the most memorable in the whole of the series…and then Riker gives his best line on the whole series…”Mr. Worf…Fire.” Cut to black. To Be Continued.

I didn’t see it when it first aired, as I was 4. I even knew how it would all turn out when I first watched it, but every time I have watched this episode, or even just that last scene…it gives me chills. It is the best cliffhanger of all time as far as I’m concerned.
