Wesley Says Goodbye

Story: Final Mission
Written By: Kasey Arnold-Ince and Jeri Taylor
Series: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Year: 1990

After the first season, Wesley’s character was really toned down. After the second season his character took a backseat in a lot more episodes. He usually had a line or two, and didn’t get as many prominent parts to play in episodes. There were parts here and there, but he really wasn’t the go to save the ship kid anymore. That was a good thing…if you aren’t Wil Wheaton.
So Wheaton decided it was time to move on. You can’t blame him, he was a young guy getting interested in girls and other things, and being the only kid going through puberty and all that good stuff (on TV no less) in a group full of adults probably wasn’t the most exciting situation to be in anymore. So Wheaton decided to leave, and Wesley had to be written out.

Like everyone else, I really hated Wesley in that first season, but you know what? He is kind of better from the second season on. He is this little twerp at first, but he had grown up enough that if you still hated him you were just stuck in the past. He got better, he really did.

So here is Wesley’s final appearance as a regular cast member. And it is a solid episode. It really let Wesley go out with a bang before going to the Academy. He is trapped on a planet with his Captain who gets incapacitated…and now with only a jerk from the planet as helped, he is forced to take all of the training he has learned since he first joined the Enterprise, and take it into practical use. It is a solid ending for this character.

But he’d be back for two other episodes before the show ended.
