Story: Heart of Stone
Written By: Ira Steven Behr and Robert Hewitt Wolfe
Series: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Year: 1995
“Heart of Stone” is a great episode. We get two solid stories, the first has Odo and Kira trapped on a moon, with Kira herself trapped in an ever growing crystal. Odo has to save her, and it brings in many elements about Odo’s feelings for her, and her obviousness to his feelings. It is well executed, and the twist in the end is well done. It isn’t Kira trapped at all…it is the Female Changeling. We also get a nice little tale with the origin of Odo’s name.
The B-story is focused on Nog. Nog has reached a Ferengi ritual, and he is now a man. He gets to pick any mentor he wishes, and he chose Sisko. He wants to be the first Ferengi in Starfleet. It is an interesting story of how you can’t judge a book by its cover, and how Nog has grown to be less interested in the Ferengi ways. Nog’s arc builds slowly, and that is where this show shines.
NEXT TIME: The first joint Bajoran, Cardassian, and Federation science mission
