Story: Hollow Pursuits
Written By: Sally Caves
Series: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Year: 1990
This episode serves as the introduction of one my favorite recurring characters, Lt. Reginald Barclay. The writers decided to give us a character that doesn’t have the built in confidence the characters we are used to in this series have. He is just an average kind of guy, really brilliant in his skill in engineering, but the guy is just nervous and shy.
Barclay has become a little bit too comfortable in the holodeck. There he can play out his fantasies of being tough and confident, without having to actually stand up for himself in front of a real Riker.
I also like that for once, Troi doesn’t seem entirely useless as the ship’s counselor. When she has a real job to do, and not just telling the captain what he can already tell about the aliens that are hiding something but we don’t know what. She actually makes attempts to get Barclay to truly grow up, work hard, and get out of the holodeck.
I think it touched on a decent issue, with an invention as great as the holodeck, couldn’t it become too easy to just stay there?
